Things To Consider When Selecting Your Fly Fishing Tackle
If you are fishing for large fish you should consider selecting a heavier line. If you attempt to cast using a light weight line and you happen to catch a large fish you may end up watching your catch swim away after the line breaks under strain. As an example, someone fishing for large salmon would want to select an 8 or 9 weight line to accomplish the task. An angler hoping to catch some panfish would likely chose a 6 weight. Keeping a variety of weights among your fly fishing tackle is a great way to make your fly fishing setup more flexible.
The leader and tippet are a part of your fly fishing tackle that is used to connect your line and fly. The leader portion is sectioned into three parts with the thicker end attached directly to the line. On the opposite end of the leader is the tippet. You will attach the fly directly to the tippet. You want your leader and tippet to be strong enough to hold your catch but not too big where it will alarm the fish if they notice it.
The fun part of selecting your fly fishing tackle is picking your flies. If you are just getting started you might want to select a premade box of assorted flies that will cover a specific group of fishing. For example you could select a box that was designed for lake fishing which will accommodate trout, bass, and panfish. Some boxes are designed for a specific fish such as a bonefish. It should provide you with the proper flies to fish the different habitats where you might find them and should mimic things specific to the bonefish’s diet.
Also notice that there are different types of flies available. Dry flies, wet flies, streamers, and nymphs are just a few of the different types of flies that you can add to your fly fishing tackle.
